Well, I can almost safely say that we made it through our little experiment of clean eating. Tonight ends day 10! We made it! I didn't kill anyone. I stayed away from the beer, chips, bagels and other goodies that are a constant in my bike shop. I learned some new recipes. And I feel pretty awesome I have to say!!
I know that lots of people commit to 30, 60 and even 100 day clean eating and paleo "challenges", but I can tell a difference after our little 10 day stint. First of all, I'm pretty proud of J and I for sticking to it. We love LOVE LOVE food in this house and bad food at that. Secondly, I've noticed that I'm in a better mood overall and have way more energy throughout the day. I have to say that's the biggest improvement of all! Lastly, when I say that I just feel better, I mean it. I can't really describe it, but I just FEEL better.
J and I have decided that this is the way to go. Not necessarily labeling it as a diet, but eating cleanly. That means fresher produce, far less packaged & processed food, very little dairy and meats and seafood from better resources. That's not to say a cheeseburger isn't in order every now and then...I can't preform miracles, y'all!
My challenges are going to be finding the time to make all of this nutritious food. The problem (which isn't, really) is that cooking with fresh food means that there's way more work than just pulling something out of the freezer and throwing it in the oven. That gets really difficult as the work week progresses and we find ourselves wanting something quick for dinner. I have to plan out meals and extensive grocery lists then navigate through the Farmer's Market. I, know, first world problems as they say.
The positives far out weigh the negatives, though, and I believe that it's just going to be a learning curve for us. While it requires more work, I'm totally OK with that! I've found some great resources and websites including a Paleo Crockpot mom who I have to admit I'm a little in love with. Make things AHEAD of time, throw them in the Crockpot and go? Be still my heart!!
Check 'em out, try a recipe or two and see what you think! Remember that it isn't about sticking to a crazy diet, but eating better.
